Introduction

First before I start I would like to thank Stan James of TCWO for helping out with the benchmarks.

As you probably know now, Intel has officially released the Intel Pentium 4 Northwood today, running at a speed of 2.2GHz...300MHz faster than their fastest Willamette (a 2GHz). Just in case you do not know, the Northwood has a 0.13 micron core compared to 0.18. This will allow it to run much faster and cooler, and the CPU is smaller. We've heard rumors that the Northwood has already been overclocked as high as 3GHz, but that's a whole other story. Aside from that, it also has 512KB level two cache rather than 256KB.

Of course now that the Northwood is out, it is the most expensive Pentium 4, and will drive down the prices of the Willamette. So if you are in the market for a Pentium 4 right now or in the near future, which should you buy? Is the Northwood worth the extra cost? We are here to help make your decision a bit better.

We compared 3 different Pentium 4's:

  • Intel Pentium 4 2.2GHz Northwood
  • Intel Pentium 4 2GHz Northwood
  • Intel Pentium 4 2GHz Northwood Overclocked to 2.3GHz (115MHz FSB)

If you would like to see how the Pentium 4 compares with the AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.67GHz) we will be posting benchmarks up in part 2 of this article.

Stan used a plethora of various benchmarks to compare the 3 processors, so lets just get right to it. Go on the next page to see the setup we used.
