I'm thinking about getting a 2001 Honda Prelude. Now, I have two options. I can get 4-speed auto-stick, which would have the convenience of automatic in traffic, and still is fun to drive. Or, a 5-speed TypeSH manual, which also lets the car have ATTS:
Quote:
|
Multiple sensors in the Type SH's Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS™) gauge the Prelude's cornering speed. A special differential unit then applies more engine power to the outside wheel. This helps reduce understeer for more handling precision while cornering.
|
Auto-Stick:
[quotePrelude's available Sequential SportShift™ 4-speed automatic transmission offers the shift-it-yourself fun and performance of a manual transmission, with the ease and driving convenience of an automatic for stop-and-go city traffic.[/quote]
Now, my question is, which one should I get, if I was to get this car? And please explain why. Is there a performance degrade in the auto-stick?

Personally, I would say stick.. but that's me..
Of the mechanically minded people i've talked to, whenever auto-sticks come up they attack it, as it's trying to be the best of both worlds, etc.. but never mention anything about directly inhibiting performance, though I have never explored it with them in depth.

If you dont slip the clutch too much or let your woman drive it too often then get the 5spd. If you do any of the above then get an automatic. Them transaxle cars are a pain in the a@$ to change the clutch in. It will cost some bucks if you pay to have it done. The automatic will be trouble free for as long as you own the car. The 5spd will not!! With the average driver behind the wheel the automatic will be faster. If you can shift real fast and know where the torque and horsepower peaks at then the 5spd will be faster. If you want to see what it will do then dump the clutch at the torque peak and shift about 500rpm past the horsepower peak and hold on. If you do this too often then you will be replacing the clutch on a regular basis. If you just like to corner hard then get the 5spd because you will have better control of the car during hard cornering.

Trust me, you want a 5 speed. Never driven anything more fun in my life...and I live near you in NJ, you don't have to worry about the traffic issue...except on Route 1 morning traffic...and even at that it is not bad at all....well worth the extra bit of work for the amount of fun they are... I drove and auto-stick...it does take away from the performance...HUGE difference between my car's 5 speed and the autostick...not to mention I was looking for the clutch the entire time
