    Default About hearing the lightning

The cracking sound of the lightning comes from the fact that the streak of the lightning super heats the air as it passes through causing to litterally explode. the sound wave then travels outward
So beeing in the middle of where the lightning struck is probably why you didn't hear a thing. It is also possible of course that you were scared witless ;-) and don't remember the bang....

The rumbling sound, actually, comes from the fact that the air is rushing back into place to fill the vacuum that was created due to the extreme temperature.

I would have to say it was the scared theory.

The flash of light was so incredibly bright, the I completely froze up (except for the throwing of the GRiD). I was totally frightened.

BTW: This was one of my favorite columns. Thanks for bumping it back up.
