Idiots.
O.K., here's a question. Why? No, let me rephrase that. Why?
Accepting the fact that someone is a hardware geek and did it just to say that they could is one thing, but to spend $xxxx on a G4 and then trash it just to spend another $xxx on PC hardware is just retarded.
AND to replace the Mac OS running on a PowerPC chip with a Wintel based system in the same case is defeatist. I run in both environments and can easily say that the Mac software is seamless assuming you are up-to-date. I definatly cannot say the same for PC/Windows based software. Why decrease computing performance and overall productivity just for the sake of amusement? Duh.

Um...he didn't buy a G4 just to trash it. Read the last page He bought the case by itself, as he's got some connections.
The point of it hasn't anything at all to do with hardware, or software. It's taking a beautiful case, the G4 case, and getting your PC to fit in it.

Chevette in Mercedes would be better by far
re" interesting use of your time and money.
when i want to run windows 98 on a macintosh -- for the novelty, mostly -- i just use virtual pc. cheaper. easier. done."
You bet. Frankly you'll get more computing horsepower if you do the Mac Toaster (SE) -to-aquarium conversion kit.
So you had fun. Now that you admit the Mac case is far better than any Wintel case, you're on the road to understanding that MacOS beats WindBlows in its sleep.

Why do people put oversized engines into an old Volkswagon Beetle? Why do people climb Mt. Everest? Why do people put blue neon lights in their pc case? 'cause.
Why ask why? Just enjoy it for what it's worth. I think next time he should make a PC out of a coffee can but then again people would ask why he chose Maxwell House.

You didn't read the article all the way through. He bought a case, not a computer. Yes, it would be a huge waste of a G4! As it is, he got the case, devoid of all mac hardware. It's a beautiful case, and why not use it for your PC, if you want to?
It's not a waste of a G4, because there was no G4 to waste! It was case only
It might be suprising to you, but reading things carefully is a wonderful skill so you don't look silly.

Suggestion for improvement
I've done several case mods myself, mostly putting things like old Apple IIgs-es in PC tower cases.
As a result of one such conversion, I had an Apple II power supply lying around. When I had a power supply blow out on a system, I took the IIgs power supply and ran my PC off it. (Don't even start with me about inadequate amperage... I know, I know.)
My suggestion is this: leave the G3 power supply in there! It will fit perfectly in the case, of course, not leaving you any alignment problems like the PC supply did. All it takes is a few wire splices with PC connectors to get the supply to work, I'm sure. I could be wrong, of course. I never hacked a G3 case. But, still. It seems like an obvious idea.

This is me being ignorant: Do macs use standard ATX powersupplies, but simply of varying shapes/sizes?

I'm doing the same thing.
I work at the Computer Repair shop at a small college; we've rack-mounted a couple G-4's and had empty G4 chassis. Along the way, we've junked some old Gateway systems. Here's what I did:
1)Completely stripped out the G4 box.
2)Drilled out the rivets on the back cover, leaving only the plastic.
3)Put double-sided tape on the back of the motherboard, attached to some cardboard.
4)Velcroed the motherboard to the case (Hot-swappable? )
5)Drilled a hole right behind the apple on the front of the case for the power switch--ran the switch through, then super-glued the apple insignia to the switch.
6)Super-glued the drive LED to the 'old' power switch.
So what do I end up with? A Pentium 100 G4. Messier inside and out than the one this article is based on, but it's been a fun ride!

Nice One!
Saw this posted on MacGamer and thought: "Urk! Surely not! Rip out a G4 for a Celeron?!?" Fortunately I read articles all the way through (got that anonymous zealot boy?). Nobody sensible would spend all that dosh on an inhabited G4 and pop in and old PC board anyway.
It seems to me that this was a case (no pun) of opportunity. It's certainly the nicest looking PC I've ever seen! And if this unused box shows some more of the world what the guys at Apple are up to these days, then all the better. Ironically Apple owners have been appropriating cheap PC hardware for their machines for years now, so why the hell not eh? Next month: a 1.7Ghz Athlon Ibook.

Hehehe, that would rule for portable power, unfortunetly you'd have to turn the laptops casing into a giant heatsink to have any chance of dissipating the heat
I may disagree with Apples marketing style (not that I'm fond of Intel or AMD's), but they make beautiful cases
