Okay, there are some fairly large inaccuracies in that review, but overall, the reviewer got it right, in that the Visor Platinum is a very useful device, with minor issues.

    Claim: The OS is non-upgradeable.

Reality: The OS is upgradeable, its just not Flash-Upgradeable. This means that if the OS needs to be upgraded or patched, that it gets done in main memory. This also means that if you ever have to do a hard-reset and blow away all your apps, then you lose the OS patch, and have to reapply it. But to say the OS is not upgradeable is completely false.

Claim: HotSync crashed a lot and its probably because of Outlook.

Reality: You should be only using fresh, stable, and known-quality machines for reviews and tests. If your Outlook installation is crashing, or you're having USB problems, then thats a problem with your machine, not with the software. Try doing a full FFR and if that doesnt cover it then you've got larger hardware issues.

I definitely agree with you, but then again there is a "real-world" issue. In a way testing on a brand new system is somewhat biased because most likely a person buying the Visor will not have a brand new system.

I definitely agree that it should have been tested on at least both, just to make sure it worked for that matter.

I do understand what you're saying though, since people do have different hardware configurations, testing on a non-fresh system does clear any configuration problems (most likely) with everybody else. Which is why a test on both would have been better.

The display in the Platinum is the same as
the Deluxe. The major upgrades are the OS
(3.5 instead of 3.0) and a faster CPU.

Please check the facts for your next review

Well, the OS is patchable yes, but that has it's limits. For example with a Visor deluxe you can't upgrade to Palm OS 3.5. It's the same way with the Platinum, you can't upgrade past small patches. As for testing on a fresh clean install, it's good for awhile but the reality is that people using the Platinum probably aren't going to have a new fresh install.

As for the display, the Platinum has 16 levels of gray as opposed to the 4 levels that the Deluxe has. For the regular OS the display is the same but when you use something that takes advantage of the 16 levels, like fireviewer, you'll see the difference.

    Keep the feedback coming

Actually the Visor Deluxe has a 2-bit display which translates to 4 levels. They don't specify the exact number of bits ont he handspring site but check amazon.com and compare the specs. If you can find me a visor deluxe with a 4-bit display, let me know

    Default Visor Platinum Review

I have a query as opposed to a comment.

I am the proud owner of a Platinum and am absolutely delighted with its performance to date. Nearly three weeks old! No problems other than one soft reset. Visor being used in conjunction with a Mac G4.

In the Review under the heading of "The Bad", it says and I quote:-

"I use my Platinum extensively so I go through batteries almost every week. I know there is a charging kit out there that I could buy............"

Since this model is powered by batteries I do not understand the reference to a 'charging kit', unless it is a reference to rechargeable batteries, which is not recommended by Handspring.

Would someone please be kind enough to enlighten me?

    Default Charging kit

There is a charging kit out there, called the FullCharge. It's actually a rechargeable battery that can be charged while in the Visor. No need to modify your visor so it doesn't void your warranty. The problem seems to be that the battery fits VERY snug in the visor battery slot. It's not meant to be taken out too often. It also has it's own replacement cover. I'm thinking about getting it, but we'll see... Here's the URL if you're interested...
