    1) Move to a big city in Canada
    2) call Bell Canada/Sympatico, have them check to see the availability
    3) order it, plug the modem in when you receive it by mail
    4) pay 26US$ a month

    Easy, isn't it ?

All the more reason I'm happy not to have to leave Montreal

/me pets his cute DSL box

PS to UnReBorn : Check what our modems would cost monthly in the US You'll understand why they say "Only 40CDN$ ?!?"

[EDIT] : The big city thing is to have a better chance of them having the lines ready for DSL in the area

Well, it depends on a few factors.

Depends what speed the DSL is rated at, and if it actually comes close to the rated speed, which depends a lot on you being close to the node you're connecting to, asking the ISP would be the way to go

Depends on how many users are on the cable network, if it's oversaturated and all.

Ask people in your neighborhood to see how they fare with each solution. It really varies a lot from region to region. YMMV

I live in PA, USA and I have cable internet thru a local provider, currently it is a "1-way" connection = 1mb down (cable) and 56k up (phone) its great for everything except gaming, no better than it was before... I get "2-way" cable in several weeks... 1mb up/800k down.

56k modem @48k now days ... but I had a phone line splitter that made my 4wire line into 2x 2wire lines and when it eventually reduced me to 12k I called and got it changed to 2 real 4 wire lines. (This device also prevented my getting DSL ... so I may move up to DSL in a bit ...)

I live in the UK, damn BT!!

I have ADSL (512/256), not too fast but its £40 (~$60) a month and is frequently down.

Unfortunately, I have no other choice as there is no cable in my area and even if there was its shared on a far higher ration than in the US

I connect using Earthlink's DSL service for $50 dollars a month. My upload is 116 on average and my download is 604. The service advertieses up to 1.5Mb down and 128Kb up but Verzion has Earthlink capped here in NYC. I'm not using a third-party provider such as Covad.
