I would like to the know the diffrence between cutting the ribbon apart on your regular 3" IDE cables(to make it smaller and increase airflow) and buying the new rounded cables? Is there interference if you just cut your original IDE cables?

no there isn't. However, cutting the ATA66/100 cables is a major pain. (Take it from someone who has done it a few times.) I have little trouble killing them frequently. Plus they tend to brek down over time due to the stress on the ends.

However, as far as performance, no there isn't a difference.

Exclamation Round cables - bad smell!

Ok, this is probably not an issue for many, but having lived with two 36inch round IDE cables for a couple of months I can say it is for me.

I needed to access the top four 5 1/4 inch bays of my full size tower to hold my new hot-swappable IDE raid. None of my cables were long enough and the clutter was already bad with two existing HDs, a DVD player, CD-RW and floppy.

So, I ordered 36inch round cables and they're great. Except for the smell. I have a fan on the top of may case venting ~30 degree celsius air, and for a couple of weeks my computer room smelt terrible. The severe rubber smell is starting to decrease now, but I've had a cough for ages that is probably related to heavy doses of it.

Maybe not all brands have this smell issue, mine, I think, are Orion Pro (but I can't quite remember.) Anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps something I could paint over the rubber with that doesn't itself smell bad...? "give me your raid and you won't have the problem" isn't a good suggestion, sorry

    M.

I found this article by googling "round cables audigy" and see its author has a need for the same niche product I'm seeking: an EIDE-type rounded cable (the stock Audigy cable is 22 AWG, so any 20 or 22 gauge should work fine). Unfortunately, all the 2-plug 40-pin (i.e. single drive) rounded cables I can find have the center pin blocked off for proper orientation, like the ones pictured in the article:

The Audigy needs to use that pin. You'd think as many Audigy cards with breakout faceplates that Creative has sold there would be a manufacturer stepping up to supply this market by now. :-(
I would 'really' rather have the self-shielding twisted-pair type of cables as shown in the pic above instead of rounding one off myself, btw.
