Who uses PDA's? Everyone you can think of probably has a use for a PDA...
Hum, I don't, just like I don't need a cell or a pager. I don't like electronice leashes. And I'd rather work my memory rather than use something to replace it. You have to exercice it to keep it in shape ... IMHO anyways.

MWAHAHAHAHA, you made a funny !!! You should really see my agenda, it's quite funny. Maybe 15-20 entries per semester, 7 of which are about teacher's room number and email address

the best use for a PDA in my opinion is as an mp3 player, pop in 1GB of CompactFlash, move in your songs
Sadly, that wouldn't be enough My Volt has 7 CDs full of MP3 that goes everywhere it does

Hrmm, I'm completely not understanding here, what do you mean by "daylong battery life" ?

Overall, a good article on something I wouldn't purchase in the near future. I mean, if someone gave it to me, I wouldn't turn it down, but it really is too expensive for what it does.

I've already emailed this to Chris, but I'll post here as well:

The iPAQ 3600 series DOES NOT have a 4-bit, 256 color screen. It has a 12-bit 4,096 color screen. Strange enough, you say that it has a 4-bit 256 color screen in one paragraph, then go on to say that it has a 4,096 color screen in another. Also, 3600 series iPAQs runs Windows CE 3.0 (PocketPC), not WinCE 2.0. The iPAQ wasn’t even out when Windows CE 2.0 was around. It wasn’t even around when Windows CE 2.12 was out. The iPAQ 3600 series is flash upgradeable to PocketPC 3.1 (PocketPC 2002).

As for the headphone/speaker issue, after having an iPAQ for over a year and using the headphone jack constantly, I’ve never encountered that problem and have not heard of it after going to Brighthand, PDABuzz, and PocketPC Passions web forums for over a year. Chalk it up to a flukeJ Just b/c you have a problem doesn’t mean that it affects the whole 3600 line b/c that is not the case.

Anyway, here are a list of each quote from your review that I cited above:

“The 3635 has quite a bit of notable features that consumers might be interested in. The most obvious is the color display. The display is a 4-bit color LCD which is brighter than almost every other Pocket PC because it is illuminated from the side, not the top or the bottom; this makes it very readable and visible, especially at night and even in the daylight. The 4-bit display is capable of showing 256 colors which is enough for almost every application.”

“Back to the display, the display quality was very crisp, more than any other handheld I've used, its very readable and doesn't strain the eyes as much as the Palm or Handspring color PDA's. Although the shortcoming of only having 4096 colors is apparent when viewing images, it is sufficient to enjoy color programs and images to an extent.”

“When Windows CE 2.0 came out, it supported whatever processor manufacturers decided to put into their handhelds. HP used a Hitachi chip, Compaq used the Intel chip, etc...but it has been proven over and over again that the Intel processor is superior and that every other PDA always lagged behind the Ipaq in both response time and processing time.”

“This is a problem which covers the entire 3635 line. When you plug in headphones to the jack, it pushes a connector on the mainboard so it shuts off the speaker and sound only comes out of the headphones. This is normal, but when you take out the headphones, the connector remains pushed down so you cannot hear anything out of your speakers even when there's nothing plugged into the jack, this is because of cheap materials used to build the Ipaq and Compaq is offering to repair all units that have this problem, although the problem will come back the next time you use headphones. I recommend that you not use headphones if at all possible. A notable thing regarding headphones is that the volume gets VERY loud.”

    Default Yes, it does!

The problem DOES exist....and just because you don't have it gives you no right to assume others don't. Oh...and Google the problem and you will find numerous examples!

I just bought an Ipaq 3635 on ebay and am having trouble with the very headphone/speaker issue that Chris (i think) cited. Chris, do you have any suggestions about what the best solution is. I called Compaq and my Ipaq is not under warranty anymore.

    Thanks, Jon

Did you ask Compaq/HP how much it is to fix out of warranty? That may be your only option.
