Man you don't even have to like the review (which I did by the way). That hard drive is one sexy mofo...
*yawns and puts arm around hard drive*

Thanks for the praise. I got the eBay thing removed just in case Maxtor saw, I didn't want them to get pissed off. I plan on getting more stuff from them in the near future .

Just ordered myMaxtor 5000DV today, and was glad to read this review later.
Will I be able to hook it to my current fire wire card,
and then hook my pinacle Hollywood studio fire wire to the other outlet for vidio capturing?

You should be able to, but I'm not 100% sure.

Had difficulty reformating the drive to NTFS using the Firewire connection, it would fail at the 99th % mark. Did it all over again using the USB port and it went well. BUT.... when you use the drive attached to a Firewire port and you remove it (properly). The drive is not recognized the next time you re-attach it. Using Windows 2000 SP-3.
Called Maxtor tech support, the first fellow was an a**hole, stating that converting from FAT32 to NTFS is a "Microsoft" issue. Well if it is a "Microsoft" issue, don't print on your manuals that you recommend converting the drive from FAT32 to NTFS if you have Windows 2000/XP.

Thing stopped working 3 days after it was delivered. Maxtor Website visit was a waste of bandwidth. I'm gonna try to return it and try a IBM or a WD external. I've never have any good results with Maxtor's.

Strange. I had no problems whatsoever with the Maxtor tech support. They were very helpful and polite...well, there's always some jerk there.
Sorry you had problems with the drive, I didn't have any.

No fault of yours. I knew that I've some karmic force aligned against me if I used any HD other than a WD or a seagate or IBM. Must be because I started computing using a CoCo3 and OS9.

I am currently looking for an external drive that will allow me to store large amounts and also to run editing software (PhotoShop) and some games once in a while. Will the Maxtor (or any other that you know of) run games smooth enough to play? Has this been tested by anyone yet?
