While this strays off topic, just a little bit, I it was Dave Patterson (he led the design team) who created RAID back in from '87-1992. He also co-wrote RISC 1: a reduced instruction set VLSA computer (he coined the term RISC). I believe he was later quoted as saying something along the lines of "Why work on CPU architecture, when IO is where it's at". Thus sprung RAID.

    But going back on-topic:

What type of cache are you referring to? (I'm ignorant of this market) Are you saying that much cache on the RAID controllers themselves, or to have that much as L3 cache?

On the controller, 128-512 is a recommendation, even a simple RAID controller can handle that amount, and SDRAM is cheap enough....

For L3 cache, 128-512 seems a bit high, and it definently is, over 8MB and you are not going to know the difference...

The PCRES board will have 12MB level 3 SRAM on board...

You say "the PCRES" board...this doesn't happen to be the massively MP Athlon system I heard about awhile ago, would it? Or, is it something different? And, what market is this board oriented towards (high end, obviously, but which "high-end" market?)

Also -- I have seen Xeon systems with 128Mb of L3 cache .

Maybe it's because I have weird sleeping patterns and just woke up at about 10pm, but if that was humour, I missed it....

Yes, it is the one and the same, the 12 CPU 8 channel RBDRAM Athlon board... This board is a special one, developed for "a unit involving the US army" that is about it, if you want more info, mail me, i will respond... And 128MB of L3 cache is not helping a xeon system in any way, unless it involves more than 12 CPU's 12MB is the limit of the benifit, if someone can show me a better solution, i will hire him on the spot.

However, using more than 12 CPU's should involve a cluster setup, a NUMA controller and a heavy disk setup...

For those with Goatse-trauma or that are just paranoid, that link is to an Interview with some of the 3D animators that worked on "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within", which you must see if you haven't already seen it. And if you have seen it, you must go see it again. And again.

And if your theater stops carrying it, break in and steal the filmreel. Then jump up and down and make noises like a chimp, and bring me the filmreel.

Uh...yeah. And bring some coffee. Coffee is good. Nummm....

    Coffee!?

I find CG stuff fascinating. There's an amazing combination of tools and talent in that field, and I can only imagine what the next ten years will see developing! I'd love to get my hands on the kind of hardware they use... but I don't know if I'd be able to do anything with it. So far I've twiddled with Caligari trueSpace 4.3 a bit, but I haven't made anything much more interesting than these two (I don't know if these links will work, otherwise I'll put up a link to my Tripod page):

http://mechbgon.tripod.com/sitebuil...res/parkts2.jpg This is a model of a tool I use at work, the real thing looks like these: http://www.parktool.com/tools/TS_2BIG.htm

http://mechbgon.tripod.com/sitebuil...ctures/test.avi This is a 2.2Mb .avi. I quit developing the model after I tried to animate a walk cycle for it, which proved to be very frustrating.

    Mmmm...Coffee...

Mech -- maybe you should talk to Aamir (one of our news/3d graphics kinda guys). He's big into 3d related stuff

(BTW -- I saw your AVI awhile back and think it kicks major booty)

Thanks, Paul! Yeah, I can see there are some 3D guys hanging out here.

My links don't seem to work without my Tripod cookie, so I'm guessing they don't work for others. You'll have to go through http://mechbgon.triopod.com to see them.

I couldn't get the AVI working (Something on my end) but the image is EXCELLENT!

I'm a computer animation major btw, but don't really get into it until junior year (I'll be a sophmore this year)

Default A CG major? Now I'm jealous! ;)

Sorry the AVI isn't working... it was working for me earlier and now it doesn't work for me either! Aaack. Well, I put up a still shot of the cheetah model on my Tripod page if anyone wanted to see what it was.
