Are you running a Dual processor system?
hey, just wondering how many people out there are running a dual system as their main machine. With the hardware getting cheaper I would think more and more people would be interested in a setup like this. Most are going to be Intel based obviously but anyone running an AMD SMP setup? I'm not talking about machines at work or for servers etc. I'm talking the actual machine you use for everyday stuff... hehehe I can't be the only freak around here that has one... also post your system specs and what you use your system the most for, if you don't mind...
I basically use my system for surfing the web, listening to music, playing games (although not recently), school work, occasional website designing... I know I probably don't NEED a dual system but it's good to be able to open up dozens of windows and applications without going through massive amounts of lag.

I'm running dual 200 pros!! (But it's not my main system)
However I'm in the stages of assembling a TYAN based
AMD SMP set-up. Not cheap you know!

I am running Dual 600 MHz PIII EB on an Asus dual PIII Serverworks board. Running Mandrake 8.0. The machine in my sig is my gaming rig. Simply put, the world writes software with Windows in mind. It's not too practical to JUST have a Linux or NT box. Maybe XP Professional will solve that for me.

well actually getting a dual system is not as expensive as you might think... 2 PIII 1ghz and a VP6 will cost you around $500+, which isn't that bad if you're upgrading from a 2 year old dual celeron machine hehehe... the celerons and bp6 cost me around $300 when I got them 2 years ago so it's not a bad price. AMD SMP is another story where the mobos themselves are costing around $500... but I don't plan to do a major upgrade again until 2005 hehehe... until then I'm wasting my money on a car or apartment

If you got a few dollars left over, throw them my way.
I can use it for that Tyan board!

I have one. It's not running, but I have one. Does that count?

Well, the processors work fine, but I chipped a trace which caused the mobo's stability to slowly go the way of the dodo...It slowly started locking up, then frequently, and now I can't even boot the damn thing. The processors and RAM are fine...it's just the damned motherboard. I think I may have fscked a voltage regulator controlling the I/O Voltage to the CPUs, causing them to be WAY undervolted.

I think I may have fscked a voltage regulator controlling the I/O Voltage to the CPUs, causing them to be WAY undervolted." So the processors != cpus? you said the processors are fine but it's the CPUs? I know what you mean though just kinda thought I'd point it out

I have a dual-P3 733 with an MSI 694D Pro motherboard. Dualies actually seem like a good idea for office users whose systems run antivirus, mail, and other background tasks along with their usual productivity apps. My own motive was to build a system I could take to work if I can find a job in IT, one that I could use as a versatile, expandable light-duty server/backup machine.
2 P3 733@733
512Mb Crucial PC133
MSI 694D Pro with RAID
Adaptec 19160 Ultra160 SCSI adapter
Quantum Atlas 10k 9Gb
WD 30Gb 5400rpm IDE
TEAC 12/10/32 CDRW
Zip250 IDE
LS120 IDE
Antec DataChute PCMCIA adapter
ActiSys IR transceiver
Parallel-port Zip100
Antec SX1030B case
At one point I also had a 6-disc external SCSI CD changer lined up, but that fell through.
I also wonder if the yuppies would jump on the dual-processor bandwagon if more companies started offering off-the-shelf dualies for mainstream home users. Not that they'd benefit, but you can just see the proud new owner boasting about their "2GHz" system.

a dual processor system is definitely good for developers at home or in the office. Running lots of apps and services eats up processor time and memory, so the more you have the better hehehe
yea when I tell someone that's not really familiar with dualies that I'm running 2 1Ghz PIIIs, they go wow 2 GHz... hehehe personally I do some light development but I'm gearing towards some java development and more web development for my own purposes. So I run Apache, php/mysql on the system. I know, I know it's windows 2k but it's only development. After I work on it here, I port it over to the old linux box to test it. Java apps will probably work similarly...
that 6-disc SCSI CD changer sounds mighty juicy hehehe
