Talking High temps for a PIII

ok I used to run my dual celerons at 44 degrees C and now my dual GHz runs usually at 27-31 degrees C at full load. I'm curious to know what is considered high for PIIIs? My PIII 700 runs at 43 degrees C right now, is that ok? Just wondering because I'm not really keen on having my processor get that hot. I usually try to get the temps below 40 degrees C.

While that may be higher than "average", only the worst P3s had operating temp specs of <=60C (the very first 1ghz P3s). The rest tend to be higher, and I think the 700mhz are ~80C.

Cool. Yea I guess the CPU can handle the temps I have. I've been running full load on it and nothing has crashed so it looks good. I know performance doesn't really increase as much when you lower the CPU temp a few degrees but stability does increase. I guess if the system is stable at that high of a temp. there's no point in getting the temps lower. I've always been one to keep my system as cool as possible hehehe so it's kinda new for me to run my system hot like that...

    Smile sounds ah-ite

I hit about 38~40 idle and up to 60 at full load, using boxed PIII 800, and I never crash or freeze, you should be alright.

damn 60 C is pretty damn hot... yea with the heatwave going on in NYC area, I was afraid it would get worse but since the A/C has been on, it's been better... dual PIII 1Ghz running around 30-33 idle, and 37-38 on load, system temp always stays at 24C...

This sounds hotter than the AMD cpu's. They are suppose to be the kings of heat, but from these post, their the cool guys.

I think those temps are a little high for an Intel chip.

Are you using AS II paste?

60 for a P3 is WAY outside of safety zone. Most P3's prefer 110F or LOWER to run well... 60C is WAY THE HELL outside of the safety range for them.

I would tend to agree with AllUR... I think that you need to cool that a bit. Maybe a better heatsink and a thermal paste than the stock heatsink that comes with the boxed Intel CPU. When I had a P933 with the stock HSF (Heatsink Fan) it ran 90 idle, 115 load. aka 32 and 46. If I remember right the general rule is to keep your Intel CPU lower than 50 and worry at mid 40s... might be wrong. The guy with the 60 deg processor might also... check to see if he selected the right voltage for the CPU. Remember copermines mostly have 1.65v ->1.75 for the 1 ghz (i think). for the 800 its 1.65.

I have seen a few REAL early PIIIs (450s -550s) hit under FULL load in a less that optimized cooling situation (ie most off the shelf PCs ) hit 56C but when taken to the fine school of Global Win with a touch of ArticSilverII or good Thermal Paste they drop to 43-45C depending on room temp (still full load 33C or so idle). Goes to show what good case design and gettting away from the retail box heatsink and fan can do. Most of the FlipChips run cool (28c-32c) but are all coppermine's now which means a lower micron build which means less heat.

    Just my .02$

My Pentium III 866 that I've had forever consistly runs at about 55 degrees C for hours on end in games, DVDs, benchmarks, and so on without stability problems. I wouldn't say that you have much to worry about.

    dude
you realize 55c is the intel high end for stability. you're seriously shortening chip life by running that hot.....

We'll see. I got this CPU before the official launch back when I was reviewing hardware like mad. So I've been running it in my main system since early March of 2000, and have seen the temperature reach 60 degrees C on several occasions. I have faith in the Coppermine core.

My dual ghz run about 36 C at full load and idle at 30 C and they are watercooled. My case temp is right around 30 C. My computer room stays pretty hot considering there are 6 systems runnin in there. I leave most the monitors off unless I am using that system mainly the save a little electricity and help keep the room a bit cooler..
