Xmas Odd Problem with my pc

I'm having an odd problem with my pc, its a

1.2ghz Athlon
256mb PC133 SDRAM
Quantum Fireball 20gig
Abit KT7A-RAID

am i missing anything important? anyway....

the odd thing is it always hangs during video playback, i had to underclock the processor to 1100(highest speed that it is stable) to get it to be able to play videos.

Can someone please shed some light on this matter, having a 1.2ghz underclocked to 1.1, is really sad

You have an official 1.2GHz Athllon that won't run stable at 1.2GHz?

We need more details - Your operating system in particular, also your video card, and the driver version you're using for them.

Try boosting the core voltage way the fuck up in the BIOS and see if it helps. If it does, it's a bad motherboard.

Sounds like someone has dayjob experience . Must be fun dealing with "it-just-died-on-me" motherboards.

let us determine if your CPU is fake or not.

pull it out, and write down the numbers written on the core. We can then tell you what it really is.

hmm... is it video playback exclusively? have you tried doing some torture tests to see if it crashes then? Like Prime95 or just running some benchmarks and Q3 in the background. If it's only video playback then I'm not sure what might cause that. Faulty video? But I'm not sure whether the processor speed would affect stability there... we love details so please give us some love

torture tests eh...?
would running 3dmark2001 count?

video card - WInfast Geforce 2MX SH MAX
OPerating system - WIndows ME

and yes, it only hangs during video playback, even the ingames video playback, but everything else is fine

btw, can it still be fake if i got it in a box? and also, what do you mean by "Try boosting the core voltage way the fuck up in the BIOS and see if it helps"

EDIT : i'm using the latest detonater drivers from nvidia(almost forgot that one)

You say the latest detonater drivers from nvidia....

What verison? 12.41?

It's has to be something with the drivers.

Did you try installing the stock drivers that came with the card?

I know performance will suffer, but maybe it'll run ok.

If so, then it is the drivers. You might have to drop back a version or two. I would only install the certififed drivers.

[q]also, what do you mean by "Try boosting the core voltage way the fuck up in the BIOS and see if it helps"[/q]

In your BIOS, there's a place to crank up the core voltage. Crank it up to an outrageous 1.8 or 1.85 and see if it'll run those apps.

We've had a number of bad Abit boards that the VRs could do a higher VOLTAGE but they couldn't push the AMPERAGE needed for higher CPU speeds. Repalce the board and everything's cool.

ok, i downgraded the nvidia drivers, to version 4.12.01, still same problem, i even tried to use the stock drivers.... same thing...

next thing i'm gonna try is to crank up the core voltage, but before i do that, i want to know... it wont kill my cpu in any way would it?

It'll kill it only if you have really bad cooling, or you leave it like that for a long time (electromigration -- where the electrons litterally displace silicon).

4.12.01? That's not an NVIDIA driver number. That sounds more like either the driver version date (Which is a bit old) or the versioning from someone else. NVIDIA's latest official drivers are 12.41.

Only if you don't do it too high...I think standard Athlon voltage is 1.75V. 1.8 or 1.85V should be fine, just as long as you know your CPU is running cool enough.

When you say video, do you mean like Bink and Smacker video playback? Give an example if you can...like "Diablo II crashes when I launch it" or something.

The Abit board doesn't go up high enough to fry the chip if good cooling is involved.

This brings up another point, though. 1200 runs hotter than 1100, 1100 runs hotter than 1000, etc.

How are your temps? Using the AMD Retail fan? Is the release clip on the heatsink closest to the RAM (correct) or pointing to the back of the case (backwards).

I should just point out that it's not as sad as underbussing a P2-400 to a P2-266, which is what I'm doing right now...
