Default 1Ghz Athlon and Matrox G450 only 650 3D Mark

    Hye everybody,

    I have the following specs:

    MOBO : Lex BN780 PRO
    CPU AMD Tbird 1Ghz
    Graphics Matrox G450 Millenium AGPx4 32MB
    Sound Creative Sounblaster PCI 128
    SDRam 2*128 PC 133

I am using win2k and I have recently used 3D Mark 2001 to test my system. But the result I get is only 652.
But one of my friends has the AMD ATHLON 550Mhz and Geforce 2 GTS and he gets 2150.

I am really sure that there is something wrong with my hardware or settings cause I also have a steady noise coming out of my hard disk.

I have no idea though what could be wrong.

Any ideas would be grately appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Aggelos.

While I don't have G450, I do know the general features of the chip/card. It's not meant to be a gamers card, and has well under half the bandwidth of a Geforce2 GTS. Even if the G450 had as much bandwidth as the GeforceGTS, it still wouldn't be able to perform as well because it has only two pixel pipelines, and each can only do one texture per clock (I believe).

Despite the fact that your CPU can do physics faster, and stuff like that, his board does the Transform and Lighting (the super nasty stuff) on the card itself, leaving the CPU free for other stuff. Your CPU has to do all the Transform and Lighting, because the G450 doesn't have those features.

All in all -- the G450 isn't meant to be a gaming card, and it shows when it is placed under the stresses of modern 3d gaming. I don't know the exact scores you should be getting, but they don't actually sound unreasonably low

The steady sound out of your hard disk doesn't sound good though.....Care to elaborate more?

Well, for one thing, you're using 3DMark2001 instead of 3DMark2000. GeForce3s don't even do well on 3DMark2001. Try going down to 3DMark2000 and then start comparing benchmark scores.

For the record, when I ran my GF2 on a P2-266, I think it got 1240 marks in 3DMark2001...That's from memory, though, and I'm probably way off.

Oh yeah...something I forgot to mention - 3DMark2000 and 3DMark2001 skew heavily toward test situations using Hardware T&L, something the G400 and G450 lack. Therefore the GF2 will almost always outperform a Matrox G450.

    Well

geforce 2 chips are supposed to be the top performing graphic cards in market at the moment.

What other chips can have good performance under 3d mark 2001?

Not quite. GeForce3s are the top performers right now. That's the only card that natively supports all the features tested in 3DMark2001. The Radeon 2 and the Kyro III should be able to handle it when they're released, tho'.
Oh...and let us not forget about Bitboys Oy. To quote the Navi delivery guy from Serial Experiments: Lain, "It'll be able to handle any kind of software, without ever crashing!"

yea the G450 isn't that great when it comes to 3D gaming performance. The thing is with 3Dmark2001, there's a lot of issues to deal with to get an accurate score. Your score is low though. Do you have the most up to date drivers? What OS are you running? Make sure you have DX 8 also. Try using other benchmarking programs or games to test your video performance. Have you noticed a degrade in performance in actual applications like games and things like that? I mean if your card is performing below average for a G450 then I'd look into it but if it isn't then you're probably just surprised it's that low

Like everyone else said, G450 won't be able to handle games that are really graphic intensive. the 3Dmark2001 tests use a lot of features that the G450 wasn't meant to deal with so you'll always see lower performance...

    Default drivers are CRUCIAL!!!!

when i first installed my OS, i got 6000 something (in 3dmark2000)

after installing AMD miniport and AGP drivers i got 8500,
and after installing win2kSP2, i got 10000 NO JOKING
    (with OCed gf2pro, 1.4@1.65ghz athlon)

so, you see, drivers are CRUCIAL!!!
