Specs:
Abit KT7
Tbird 1000
256 MB Crucial
SBL value
Intel NIC
CL USB modem blaster
USB mouse & USB keyboard
Problem: Locks up when using the modem or USB scanner. Runs fine all day using just the mouse and keyboard. Sometimes it will go longer before locking up if I unplug my scanner, but it will eventually lock up.
What I have tried:
Reinstalled Windows ME, installed ONLY the modem. Still locked up. Installed VIA 4.25, still locked up. Installed the VIA USB thingy even though I don't think it is needed in ME, still locked up. Played in the bios, still locked up. Put on loin cloth and chanted Zulu tribe songs around it while threatening it with a blow-dart gun. It still locked up.
I say the USB controller on the Mobo is bad, just want a couple more opinions before I RMA...

I had the same problem.
Only for me, it was a NIC and a USB KBD and mouse.
I know you said it works if you REMOVE the modem, but have you tried the modem in different PCI slots?
If I remember correctly, the USB shares with slots 4 and 6. I may be wrong so you may want to check the unofficial FAQ yourself (an essential read for KT7 owners).

Thanks for the response, but the mobo is in the hands of USPS now. I replaced it with an MSI K7T Pro 2A (say that 3 times quick) and all works happy now.
Just FYI, the modem was an external USB modem, and so was the scanner. I actually reinstalled windows and had just the modem and video card installed and was still having problems. The company I bought from had me call ABit (what a treat) and they decided the USB controller was defective.
Thanks again for the responses...

But Abit NEVER makes a bad board.
Take the advice of dozens of Abit owners out there. Reboot several times, jiggle the wires.... it will work.

Abit has been playing around with new Bios features for there mobos. I have a KT7 and a KT7-Raid with no problems at all. The WZ BIOS is what works the best for my systems. Im sure you could have flashed to one of the newer Bios and fixed the problem. Then again you might have had a bad mobo. Too late to find out now isnt it.

One word:
ACPI.
Actually, I believe that a few months ago Abit coordinated with some website out there for people to post hardware configuration issues with the KT7 and USB - They were apparently aware of the issue and trying to get as much diagnostic input as possible.
My roomie has a KT7, and he loves it, but had all sorts of niggles with it. Then I told him to turn of ACPI and reinstall the OS. Now it works like a charm. If you can't disable ACPI in your BIOS, you may have to get one of those BIOS-image modification tools to manually flip the switch in the microcode. Those things are nice to play with anyway because you can unlock BIOS settings which are normally disabled by Abit.
See if you can find more at BP6.com. They carry a lot of Abit-specific utilities.
