Hey.
I got a P3 850 a little while ago, and it runs fine. But I have a question about temperature. I have a heat sensor on the chip and I was wondering what a good temperature is, like a temperature that it can get up to and still be stable. I think right now it hovers around 110-120*F, but this seems high to me considering my old Celeron 400 never went above 100*F. I also have a copper square thing (cost me $10! what a f-ing rip off!) that has a hole in the middle for the die that goes between the processor and the heatsink. Is it important that I cool the rest of the chip along with the die, or would it be better if I had all the cooling of the heatsink go toward cooling the chips die?
Does a processor run faster when it's cool than when it's hot? Just a few questions about processors, if anyone knows the answer to 1 or more, feel free to answer even if you don't have the answer to all. Thanks.

You're kinda comparing apples and oranges. The temperature of the P3 SHOULD be higher (well, assuming you have identicle cooling) than the Celeron, due to the fact that the P3 outputs, at max, 26.4 watts. The Celeron 400 only output 23.4. That's enough to make a difference of a few degrees celcius right there.
The good thing about you having bought the copper spacer is that it makes sure that the heatsink doesn't go uneven, which would cause very inefficient heat removal. So it's good that you got one of those. Yeah, 10 bucks is a lot, but I'd buy one if I had a flip-chip CPU.
Transistors are able to switch faster when they are cooler. Kryotech, and other companies use this to their advantage, and basically overclock the chips, but it's not really overclocking in the same sense, because when you cool the CPU as much as Kryotech does, you are taking the frequency rating, and thowing it out the window. The reason is as I said above - because transistors can switch faster when they are cooler.
If your temperature readings are accurate, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'd get some better air flow through the case, make sure to get rid of dust bunnies, etc, but I wouldn't worry. The P3 800 is rated for 80 degree's Celcius - well below what you have.

Air is goos my friend
No i thinks yours is ok just get more air flow, i have a 400@500 and when the new motherboard goes in it will be a 400@700 or 800 and that will need a good fucking fan.

Dude...What kind of processor are you running that's gonna be able to handle that? The only thing I can see that's possible here has to be a Celery...because there's no other way you could crank a PII up to 700. Even so, due to the cache quality in the Celerons, most people haven't gotten them past 650...

are you guy serious?
I have a p3 800eb w/133 mhz bus, and mine runs at 71 deg Farenheit. I have a boxed chip that came with the fan, an agp cooler fan, and a hole cut in the side of my case with a standard case fan blowing cool air in on the cards.
