Dream system huh...will i'd go exotic i think
Let's start with the visual side...
I think a Geforce3 128meg DDR with digital out(Standards are a lil undecided at the moment)
Piping the Eye candy out to a Runco Projector (i had the 996 8 inch lense version in mind since it copes with 2000 x 2500 x 32 bit @ 100hz) also includes inbuilt line doubling (with provision for inbuilt line quadroupler I think)
CPU...The upcoming Foster chip is soon to be realeased with core speeds up to 2gighz(prolly above)
and Just yesterday i saw a sweet board with 4 of the puppies on it (in a server case)
I'd look at AMD but they haven't given us as much as a peep at their SMP chips..
Since were Quad Processing, It's going to have to run with Win2k or XP(which i'm not sure has SMP support, but if it does i'll take it thanks)
As for HD's, I think That a Nice big case would hold 21 HDs without any trouble...They'd prolly be best off with 16 of them in a Raid 5 setup(with 1 as a online spare)
2 with the OS core and the remaining 2 as Swapfile ETC space
the first 16 would be the small 80 gig SCSI HD's (7400rpm) deliberatly not over the top as to bring down the noise and heat levels
(deliberatly
But the remaining 4 drives need to be as quick as possible for normal system operations so Some of the extremly expensive 22krpm fibre drives(hehe never heard of em huh?? they are in big ...BIG mainframes)
okay internal done..
For CD-ROM i think that a few nice 72x Kenwood drives (multihead) will do fine
Burner..Just whatever is around..16x12x10x is ok with me
RAM...160MHZ DDR(OC'd of course)...an how much....whatever I can damn FIT!!(6 gig would probably fit)
sound..the hercules XP soundcard got a excellent review so i'd go for that
External speakers..Well i usually use headphones..(electrostatics) but if they were externals i'd make my own(I've already made 8 x 500w amps so it's a matter of time)
Case..okay this is the fun 1...only reciently i learned about immersion cooling, So i think this is definatly the way, so the basic idea is cover most of the non moving parts (CPU, HDs, RAM, MB etc) with a liquid , then run the liquid through a radiator and wallah, very quiet cooling with previously unseen overclocking results.
again, this isn't widely available so i'm up to making my own here, Using a car radiator with a 30" cooling fan is probably the most efficient idea(and quietest)
this case will be heavy, so some wheels to roll allong as i pull it round would be ideal(preferably as shock absorbing as possible)
NIC..definatly Multiple ported gigabit fibre NICS..(maybe a 10/100 compatible one as well for old networks)
PSU..Server boxes regularly come with multiple power supplies...how the hell else do u power an insane number of drives..!!
It would probably be worth getting 4 PSU's built into the case..
hmm, don't think i missed anything...

Wow....how do you tolerate the noise of the swiftech? Are you consoled by the fact that you basically have a bitchin' fast machine?

its not loud...see those fans are not delta. its from sanyo, and i love those fans. think about it, 2 montster fan intaking air from front, and one on the cpu and one is taking air out at the back.
delta fans make noise because its 68 cfm. sanyo ones are only 53 cfm.
I am having problems cause Klipsch just release 5.1 and if i buy it my stinkin NEWQ PLATINUM is gonna be waste. Its only support for 4.1.
YOU JUST CAN'T KEEP UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess all I can say is...."wow". That rig puts to shame anything I could ever dream of affording!
I think my "dream rig," if I am limited to that which can actually be purchased, might be quite similar to the setup you have right now, minus some of the expensive peripherals....
Oh yeah, I personally would stay away from those IBM drives, as they've been notorious for failuer

Heh, the reason why my "dream box" would stay as an x86 box is because of the software base. Sun machines are nice and all (wll, actually they're not that fast per processor, just that they have incredible scalability), but Sun machines don't have the kinda software I'd run....at least, not yet.
