Question Difficulty of using small lcd's

For use in Windows or Linux as a non-primary display through a serial port. Are these things dificult to set up? Such as must one know assembly code or are they plug-and find-someone-elses-program-play? I'm thinking it would be kind of kewl to add one. Here's what I'm talking about: Link. It seems some regular ebayers sell similiar products from around $2-$10 for basic displays. Something to just display time/temperature/mp3 title/computer system specs/random quotes. Geeky stuff. So has anyone done something like that. Any information would be nice. Thanks.

Great question! I've been thinking about this myself but have not been to the stage where I was going to buy one. Anyone out there with more information?
