    Default Zip Drives

Does anyone here use any Zip Drive (100 or 250)? I use a 100 drive, but I just am curious about peoples opinions on the actual Zip format.

I know I love it. The disks are small, and hold a lot, and VERY cheap.

I still own my parallel ZIP100, with a ton of disks. However it is slow--and I had no need for it since I got a burner a few years back. All it does is sit in a drawer somewhere. It was basically one of those things that could have been great.

I have a zip drive somewhere (parallel 100 as well), and only really used it when it came out. As Massacre, I really make use the CD burner and that overtook the zip drive.

Whats Iomega up to right now? It must be losing a LOT of money from the CD-buring "revolution." What ever happened to their Jaz drives? They held about 2GB, right?

Jazz Drives were great. I had a friend who owned one. They were quick (atleast the SCSI ones were), and yes they were 2GB. However the disks were extremely expensive--and so was the unit itself. CD-Rs came out and were just so much cheaper to impliment and kept getting faster. IOMEGA has had their own CD burner (and media) line for several years now. They have made mostly external and mobile solutions (as far as my memory serves me).

As for now--I have no idea how the company is standing. It must be all the Macs that have ZIP100 or ZIP250 drives in them--yea, that must be it.

I remember once zip and jazz drives were hit by the "click of death" discovered by Steve Gibson and gradually, they just faded away. Pretty strange!

    Thumbs up I like them

I use a zip drive frequently. My opinion also is that they are great and very usefull. Just about every computer at my university has a zip drive. That makes things very convenient for me. As far as I know, no computers for students have cd-rw or cd-r drives. It's a lot more convenient to be able to transfer ~100MB's as opposed to 1.44.

The ide version is much faster than parralle. I use the zip100.

I got a USB powered 250 zip a few weeks ago to read some files for a web client.

I use it more than I ever thought I would. Just plug it in the USB (no power cord at all) and windows (2k & up) auto-configures for it. I dont even need to carry a driver disk around with me
