Would you be building it your self or ordering it for a comapny? And what would you be doing with the system? Games?

Just take a look at PriceWatch.com. I'll put together a whole list either later tonight or tomorrow but I don't have time now.

OK, well I actually had some time so here goes. I assumed that you did not need a monitor, speakers, mouse or keyboard.
Asus K7N266-VM = $70
AMD Athlon XP 2200+ = $90
Crucial 256MB DDR 2100 RAM = $70
GeForce 4 Ti 4200 (128MB Chaintech) = $147
SoundBlaster Live 5.1 = $31
Lian Li PC-52 Case = $115
PC Power and Cooling 350W Power Supply = $75
8x Hitachi DVD-ROM Drive = $19
Samsung Floppy Drive = $8
Accton 10/100 Ethernet Card =$6
Aztech v.90 56K Modem = $7
Total:
$638
Thats pretty cheap, isn't it? If you want to get the best performence, upgrade to some better stuff, such as the video card (maybe a Ti 4600 if you can afford it), or an Audigy sound card. Just look on Pricewatch. Oh by the way, these prices do include shipping.

It allows you to have fast internet if you already suscribe to it (such as DSL, Cable, T3, T1, etc). If you don't have one on the computer you are using now, that means you don't use Ethernet internet in your house, therefore you don't need that card, but it is useful to have in the future.

No, an ethernet card would not be needed for a dialup internet connection.

OK....I'll take a crack at it
Gigabyte GA-7VAXP $119.00
2x256mb PC3200 $158.00
Audigy2 internal $107.00
Klipsch 5.1 THX Speakers $399.00
Athlon 2100+ $110.00
Total $893.00 w/o tax and shipping
Keep that videocard..............Battlefield1942(1600x1200), JediOutcast and Return to Castle Wolfenstein run fine(2048X1536).
The motherboard which I just got for one of my systems, overclocks nicely if want to do so and is very upgradeable. It has a built in 6.1 sound and ethernet. Personally if you like to game get the Audigy2 the games I use take advantage of the EAX extensions. The Klipsch 5.1 speakers I can also vouch for they are awesome. However Logitech is going to release their
Z-680 system soon enough. It will probably be at least $150.00 cheaper then the Klipsch.
Same system with Logitech instead of Klipsch. $743.00
with that savings I would throw in the
Yamaha CRW-F1ZE burner $134.00 w/shipping
New total is $877.00
Next spring when the genuine serial ATA drives come out get the HighPoint card and good drive. The other two drives you might as well keep for multimedia storage etc... If you keep this computer as long as you last one. I think will be quite happy. You'll probably need to find a case probably and power supply.
best of luck,
-cliff

Here's my stab...some will like it, some won't, but my .02
Athlon XP 1600+ CPU -$55, NewEgg
ECS K7S5A mainboard (includes onboard CMedia sound and onboard Ethernet, takes either PC133 or DDR SDRAM, and easy to replace later), $55, Newegg
Taisol heatsink/fan, AMD recommended (not for overclockers but quiet and reliable), approx $20-25
Antec SX630II Case w/300w PS, $70-90 from different vendors
256MB PC2100 DDR DRAM - Choose brand name (Crucial or Kingston ValueRAM) for about $65-70 almost anywhere. If you have the cash, buy 2 of them and go to 512MB of RAM.
Western Digital 80GB Special Edition 8MB cache Caviar HDD, $107 at NewEgg. 3 year warranty.
ATI Radeon 8500LE vid card, approx $90 from many vendors (if you have more budget, a Geforce 4 Ti4200 for $130-160)
CD-ROM or DVD - Pick from tons, I prefer Toshiba if you're going IDE, but easy and $30-80 depending on cd or dvd
Floppy - equally easy, figure $10-20
Monitor -Don't skimp on this. Samsung 955DF, probably $300-350, 19" max 1600x1200@75Hz (recommend 1280x1024@85Hz)
Speakers - You make the call. Keyboard and mouse are also personal (I use IBM/Lexmark 102-key clickers, and an MS Intellimouse explorer 1.0)
If you want a CD Burner, yamaha OEM IDE's are probably the best, an 8x4x24 or 8x8x24 should be available new for $80. If you need a modem, don't skimp on this either unless you plan on broadband internet soon. Spend the $50 for an OEM US Robotics 56k PCI hardware V.92 modem .
