what's the most likely failure cause of not recognizing cd's? the laser is clean for sure, but the cd's don't read. after much tedious retries at discovering the problem i have concluded (successfully?) the thin brown cable sttatched to the laser head and the ic-board has hairline cracks. the failure rate of reads is approaching 100% as time goes on. anyone out there know much about repairing these things or is it like realligning the heads on floppy drives... ie: not worth the time and effort involved vs buying a new drive? thx 4 any help.

I had a neighbor who's cd-drive didn't work from time to time, gradually getting worse. I replaced the drive with a newer, faster one and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, that drive went bad too. Turned out the power supply went kaput. It wouldn't be worth the trouble to fix the drive (unless it's under warranty) since you can find decent drives for under $50.

    Good luck!

I would have to agree that the best solution is probably just to buy a new drive..

I ran into that once before, with a HP brio.. the cd-rom drive would work one second.. and just halt, (freezing windows often in the process.. )
