    Question

I'm looking for people who've actually mounted fans on their video cards, V3, GF2MX and what actually worked best and what didn't work so well. I'm finding holes don't line up and I don't really care for Thermal tape. Any input would be appreciated?

    Default video card cooling

    Hey

There is a cooler that is made especially for Geforce chipset cards and some 3Dfx cards. It's called the Blue Orb and it's the most popular solution for overclocking your card--it also looks really cool: I found a special online deal for it at www.coolerchips.com:

    https://secure.websitecomplete.com/...pt.asp?dept=115

It's $8.50 there but on back order till 3/8. They don't have a picture of it there, but they do at www.pctoys.com:

    http://pctoyz.safeshopper.com/15/139.htm?172

These people should have it in stock, but it is $12 there.

    Default There's also this...

If you're having trouble with the Blue Orb, or are concerned about the space it takes up (It'll block PCI-1), then you can also try Tennmax's Lasagna cooler systems...They make great low-profile chipset coolers, and they make them in three different configurations for most any video card or motherboard mounting.

Here is a link to a site that shows how to put the blorb on a Voodoo5 with zip ties. Might be worth checking out. Here it is. http://www.procooling.com/html/blorb_n.shtml

    Hope that helps.

Big Thanks for the hyperlink, Matt. It was what I was looking for. Zip ties do look like a good idea!

Here is another link you might want to check out. They have links to different reviews of the products they are selling.

    Millisec

My son had a Vodoo 3 that I moded. I removed the clips that hold the heatsink on then used a knife to seperate the heatsink from the thermal adhesive. I then lapped the heatsink and core. I had an old fan from a 233mmx cpu and the holes lined up with the ones on the heatsink. I put some Artic Silver on the core and used two small bolts to hold the heatsink/fan on the card. It worked great for what it was. I was able to o/c it to 197mhz before artifacts would begin to show up.

For a permanent bond superior to thermal tape you can use Arctic silver epoxy- this is the most thermally efficient solution.

    Default ruquick experience

Sounds like you put some odds and ends to good use. Unfortunately, I've made similar efforts without same success!! Still interested in other funky ways to mount HSF for V3 or GFMX2 that people have tried?

I've seen posts where people remove the stock heatsink and fan and replace it entirely. If you have a local Radio Shack, I know they sell heatsink and fan combo for a 486 processor at my local one, and it's pretty small. One method of reoving the H/S is to place it in the freezer, then pry it off using a butterknife. however, there are allot of horror stories about this, one guy actually cracked his GPU while taking HS off of a GeForce. You have been warned!

    Also, check this out:

    Default extreme video card O/C'ing

I saw one article where some guys put a super orb on a TNT2 Ultra. That's right, a super orb, not a blue orb. They managed to get the core frequency up to 400 MHz! At that speed, it actually outperformed a GF2 Ultra. Unfortunately, they lost the use of all their PCI slots due to the size of the orb and the placement of the duct tape securing it.
If I can find the URL, I'll post it.

Laugh Super Orb on a TNT2 Ultra, heh, heh

These guys are something taping a Super Orb to a TNT2 Ultra! They are desperate mod men. Nonetheless, it's interesting the success they had o/c-ing to 400mhz. I wonder how long it would last running like that?

    Laughing SuperOrb on a TNT2Ultra?

Sporting better scores than a GeForce2 Ultra? I don't think so. I've looked over some of the other "Ghetto" articles on Apu's/Icrontic, and they all seem to be kind of a joke. Can you explain how FPS was 75 at any resolution? I can't either...I think that page is just a joke, guys...
