hehe
Yea that would be cool. Actually my school has a wireless network up here for the laptops. Each incoming freshman gets a laptop equipt with a wireless card from Symbol Technologies. So basically the freshmen can go and surf the web in class or anywhere within the radius. The whole campus is wired, you can even use the wireless in the starbucks across the street hehe...
The laptops are expensive though... It would have been nice if I had that when I was a freshman. *sigh*

Yes, that would be extremely nice. Especially for those interested in other people's personal info
Seriously, wireless can be good if you're running a network for games only or something, but I don't like the idea of someone being able to intercept the info.
I prefer cables to wireless, I figure, it's not 100% safe either, but if someone wants the info, they'll have to work a bit (or use proggie to do it for them )
For making a game network amongst neighbours, it'd totally own though

True, I can see how security issues could be a major problem.....Look what happened when cell phones came out. Calls could easily be intercepeted at the time.....

It all depends on how well the data is encrypted. If you can encrypt to the point where it takes Fort Meade a couple of hours to crack then its all good. (Unless you're planning a terrorist attack on the US in a week) .

seems like wireless would have more latency then regular cables.

I'll stick with the cables. The headache of a basic hub. cables. ip addresses, internet connection sharing, all your setup stuff is tough to configure. I cant imagine trying to configure a wireless network.

Well, i would imagine it would be quite easy, since there AREN'T any cables... heh..
Funkey - on latency, not neccesarily, wireless can go QUITE fast..

Id still like to have a "hard wired" LAN, that way you have more to brag about when people see all the wires :P

I don't know, as mentioned above, the latencies would probably be greater and when I was setting up my home LAN, I didn't even consider wireless if I could have something faster.

Why WOULD latency be greater?

Latency is higher with wireless products because they are all broadcast services. That pretty much means that every node connected to the network hears what you have to say, every packet of damn data--only accepting what is sent for though. The only way that I can see wireless being accepted as a REAL standard is if it starts to accept some rules of the ATM (Asyncronus Transfer Mode) standard. What pretty much happens there, is that a smart peice of firmware is embeded in the hardware switch(router, etc) and a more direct route of serving data to the end user is formed. If this can be transfered to the wireless comunity, I can definatly see it becoming a new standard. But it just is not worth it at all now. Wait!!!
I am damn happy with my 10/100 Full Duplex wired network. 200Mbps is great! (100 up, 100 down)

Well, latency is a pretty big issue when your wireless net is spread out pretty far but in a an apartment like mine, you dont have to worry since the reciever is in pretty close proximity to the transmitter. I found out after more testing of the wireless net that latency becomes an issue when you get more than 200 ft. away from the transmitter. As for the D-Link kit i reviewed, it was basically plug and play and it also allowed for 8-bit encryption but I don't need that, it's not like anyone will be pulling my pr0n from the air in my own place.
