This has been bothering me since I walked out of the store that built my computer. Here's the question. Is it really necessary to reinstall the OS when replacing a sound card? The guys at the store said that, but I think they were just trying to appease me. I unloaded and reloaded my sound card on my own just to see if I could do it and everything was fine.

2nd question. The sound card I have in my system is "adequate" for now (Asound 16bit). Can someone give me an idea what kind of increase in sound quality it would be for me to upgrade to SoundBlaster Live! Value, X-gamer or even the Platunum version? I know it would be better, but describe how much better. Would it be like going from cheap Technics speakers sounds to Bose or something in-between? I'm trying to decide if it's worth the extra 50 bucks for the X-Gamer version or if the SB LIVE! would suffice. Should I look at other makers even like Turtle Beach or SIIG?

My speakers system is 3 Yamaha speaker setup (not the best, but sounds are pretty rich). I'm getting back into gaming after squelching that obsession for 5+ years and would like to indulge in surround sound eventually.

just like upgrading a video card you will get a sound difference too. i would go with the Live Value thats what i have and its the X-gamer without the software pack. 3rd get whatever speakers you feel you would be comfortable with.

    Arrow Sound card? Nah...

I wouldn't think a reinstall is necessary for that kind of equipment. Reinstalls are always HELPFUL, of course, but no...not required at all. You can replace practically any piece of equipment on your system without reinstalling your OS...short of your motherboard.

Just as a note, though. Symantec Ghost is your best friend. Ghost your system and reinstall it whenever you want in minutes...Damn that program is smooth...
