Well I was killing some time and decided to see if I could get my fsb a little higher on my KT7-Raid mobo and well I couldnt. It seems that 113 is as high as it will go. I lowerd my ram speed thinking that I could get it higher but it wouldnt do anything but give me windows protection errors. It is stable at 112 with the ram set at turbo, cas2, etc.. It is stable at 113 with the ram at cas3 but it is not stable above 113. I may put a heatsink/fan on the clock generator just to see if it makes any difference. I guess my only other option is to get a new mobo with the 266 buss. Maybe I should just be happy with 1400mhz. No maybe not "its an addiction" speed need more mhz!!

Thumbs down It's that blasted VIA chipset...

That VIA chipset is the urine in the sweet, sweet lemonade of this motherboard...but the VIA686A does do a better job, seeing as how it officially supports 133MHz FSBs...I've read of some people successfully cranking a KT7 to 133, but then the chipset just wouldn't allow more. Are you using the stock chipset cooling, or maybe a Blue Orb or Lasagna? I can't stand the fact that I bought a Lasagna for my BP6 and now it's just sitting there since the BP6 is dead...-snif-

Like Cutriss said, the KT7 generally could not go very high with the fsb. Actually, in all the numbers I have seen, 113 is pretty good. Many people couldn't even get 110. The new KT7A officially supports 133mhz fsb. Many people are able to get 150mhz or better with this mobo. Oh, and to just make a correction, it is the 686B southbridge on the KT133A chipset.

One thing that I have learned about fsb overclocking is that the cpu does make a difference. I started out with a T-Bird 900 and I could only get the fsb to 104 with it. It would go to 1200 with the bus at 100 and the multiplier at 12 though. I gave that one to my son and bought a T-Bird 1200 and this one will go to 113 fsb. I run it at 12.5x112 with my ram maxed out. I am using the same setup with the 1200 that I used with the 900 so it has to be the cpu. Same ram, video card, mobo, bios, cooling, etc.. In the past I had always thought that the fsb limits were due to the chipset on the mobo, but now I know different. The chipset does make a difference comparing a KT7A-Raid to a KT7-Raid for sure. I think the people who can get the high fsb overclocks have good ram for one and also good processors. The people who cant that have good ram probably have a processor like my 900 that just will not overclock that much with the fsb. I dont think there would be a large enough gain in performance for me to step up to the KT7A-Raid mobo right now with my current setup so I am going to try and hold out until some newer technology hits the streets.

Thumbs up Well...there's something even better to wait for...

If you're gonna upgrade, you might as well wait for DDR...that'll be a pretty good performance booster. I just wish that PCI-X was being implemented, but the way things look, it's not but another year or two away from being included in systems.
