    Question

I need some advice. Here is my system:
    AMD k6-2 550
    Creative Labs tnt2 ultra
    128mbs pc100 ram

If i upgraded to a new video card...would i notice the performance or is my cpu going to slow down the performance of the the card?? Should i upgrade my system or get a geforce2 card to hold me for awhile?

    Pat

Hmmm....You might be able to get away with just a new video card. For example, you were thinking about getting the GeForce 2. The GeForce features something called a GPU which stands for Graphics Processor Unit.

This is supposed to take off a lot of load from the processor because rather than having the CPU do calculations, the GPU which is on-board chip on the video card, can do it itself. So this can really help with systems that don't have top of the line processors. If you know somebody that has a GF2 or GF3 I would ask them to borrow it for a couple hours, throw it into your system, and see if it really makes a difference in your games.

AnandTech has an article about this. This should cover everything you need to know... http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1346. This is anoher article that is also related to it: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1406&p=1

I know someone who has a GF2 Ultra, in a K6-2 400mhz machine. While the 550 is obviously faster, there is still a sad truth to it: even though the GPU takes a lot of the load off the CPU, the K6's, without massive 3dnow! optimization, is a weak performer.

I've seen this guys system - K6-2 400, 128mb of ram, and a GF2 Ultra. His system runs just as fast at 1600 * 1200 (he has a 21inch monitor ) as it does in 640 * 480 in many games. While that sounds great, because it means that in a case like this, 1600 * 1200 sounds great, but the unfortunet truth is that the framerate is lousey
