Thanks Dave, next challenge is to shorten the left and right columns, I might use the same technique, I think I'll have a play over the weekend and maybe I'll khave a look at the php nuke stuff.
At the moment hand coding the reviews which is the main content for the site doesn't take that long, using a database could speed things up and add extra functionality but most of the applications I've come across produce crappy urls like reviews,php?id=&review126&cat=mong&item=27
This is not good for search engines and rankings as many ignore urls like this, also if the urls have something about the review in them they are more likely to appear in the search engine results, search for Lite-On-LVD on google and you will see what I mean.
If I can find a dynamic utility that produces decent urls I'll put it on the site but if I can't I'll stick with hand coding, now that I know my way around the php its quite an easy site to update.
We recenntly added the game cheats and also SLFinance, the finance services are mainly UK at the moment but when we have some USA offerings in place we will be able to expand the service.
Other things I'm thinking about adding are mobile phone specifications and reviews together with a section on ROMS which seem to be popular at the moment.

You mean SL isn't running on a DB already ?!?
Assuming it's running on Apache, you could use mod_rewrite to have 'normal' URL converted to parametrical ones on the server side of things. It should allow spidering of your site while allowing you all the goodness you can do much easily with a DB.
Heck, even my personal site is running on a MySQL DB (with Apache server and php as the language of choice FYI).

I use mod_rewrite on some of my other sites and it works well, when I tried to enable it for the forum (which is db driven) the whole lot crashed when I enabled RewriteEngine On I've no idea why, it must be something to do with the server settings which I had locked down a while back to make the site secure, I'll probably have to get some help on this one.
The directory version of the site http://www.slcentral.com/directory renames the pages in the php but that could have been achieved using the above method.

Enabling mod_rewrite for a forum probably isn't the best of ideas. Unless you can properly set it up for every possible URL it might have.
I could see it working for the main forum subdivision, but any more than that and you'll quickly run into madness territory. I was thinking more of using it for the main page, since you don't really need the forums to be spider-friendly.
That would help for your side of things, as for the UI 'problems', that's a whole different issue that I don't have time to go into right now. I'll just say that there's way too many tabs in the top right corner, for starters.

Maybe, but we did it anyway and had some interesting results..........
Its working ok on the forum now but in first version we tried we had the title in the url which was cool but with threads that had a ? in the title gave us 404's so we went back to a more basic format which is in use now. I'd like to have the urls incorperating the title tag but that wont be possible using mod_rewrite, to make it work we would need to hack numerous vBulletin files so I think I'll leave it as it is at the moment and see how the crawlers cope with the code for a while.
News posts on the otherhand are different as there's about half a dozen php files used to present them on various parts of the site, these can be hacked and sometime next week we should have some nice urls for Renz's posts.

pictures
You should make pictures, like thumbnails, that correspond to each news article. That way, it draws user interest.

Hey Unregistered,
Sounds like a good idea. I assume you mean like what we have for the review list. While this would be nice, I don't know how easy it would be to implement since its connected to the forums. Steve, is this possible?

All things are possible, it would be pretty easy to feature the news posts below the reviews with images if some kind hearted soul wanted to knock up the images, worst case scenario is that we set it up that way with a deafult image for those that aint got one of thier own.
