Default Spyware In KaZaA, LimeWire, Grokster

A game included with popular file sharing utilities has been removed due to its nature of tracking a user's web surfing over the past few days.

ClickTillUWin is an online sweepstakes that had been advertised in the KaZaA, LimeWire, and Grokster programs. It tracked the web surfing activity of the user over the past few days in order to offer targeted advertising, according to CNN.

I wasn't entirely sure what was going on when Norton AntiVirus 2002 gave me a warning during my installaton of KaZaA last week. It identified DLDER.exe as a trojan and allowed me to avoid its installation. However, obviously most users were still vulnerable to it.

New versions of the file sharing utilities have now been released without ClickTillUWin as part of the package. Apparently users were supposed to be warned in case they wanted to disable the tracking, but miscommunication resulted in this not being the case.

I was reading all about this last night and have to wonder if people really think that anything they get over the internet is actually free. Spyware has been attached to many programs including KaZaa for a long time now but has never really been brought into the spotlight such as this one.

Offer Comanion, Cydoor, and Gator are three monitoring tools that come to mind the last time I installed KaZaa. Anyone interested in finding out more about what is really on your system should check out a program called AdAware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Very true, but if you go to www.musiccity.com (Which is the homepage for Morpheus (same thing as Kaaza)) you will see a button that says "No Spyware". So one thing is putting spyware in a program, it's another thing promoting that you don't do it, but then having it in there anyway (which is why they took it out as soon as they knew).
