The New iMac Is Released
After our previous coverage of what we thought Macworld would be all about, it has finally come. Time has an exclusive all about the new iMac that has just been announced. First off lets take a look:
Looks pretty cool huh? Lets talk about what you can expect from a system like this.
First off the LCD is 15" and will feature three different models. We only know about one of the models which will feature an 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor, 60GB hard drive, and a CD-RW/DVD combo. The other two models will be more high-end featuring things like a DVD recorder. Prices should be in the $1,299 to $1,800 range.
Aside from this, Apple will also be announcing a new photo editing program called iPhoto where, according to Time, Apple will offer a hardcover 10 page book of your photos for $30. They are also releasing iTunes 2 and iMovies 2, expanding the capabilities of the software in its previous version.
Apple expects to sell 1 million of these iMacs within the year and I think the new iMac will start a craze just as the first iMacs did. Look at this computer, it's a thing of beauty, Apple fans will love it. Although one thing to take into consideration is the price factor. Starting at $1,300 is a bit pricey for 800MHz. I recently purchased a 1.1Ghz Intel Celeron system for my girlfriend for around $600 (without a monitor), so it really depends if people will adapt to Apple's prices. Apple has had relatively higher prices in the past, so it's not something new, but if they had done something as revolutionary as this and figured out a way to drive the price down to start at a sub $1,000 level, I think it would have made a BIG difference. Only time will tell.

I actually liked the original iMacs. Not super-powered, but very portable, easy to set up....exactly the things the novice user needs. Of course, the price tag was a bit high, the keyboard was too small, and the mouse was a hockey-puck with a wire.
But DAMN, Apple's been doing a great job with the aesthetics otherwise. This thing I would actually think about buying.

I don't think you should slight the new IMac on the MHz alone... Just look @ AMD Vs Intel... Yeah, so what if the new P IV runs 2.2 GHz, on most benchmarks it actually scores lower than the new XP2000+ (Which, I might add is also 1/2 the price, and only runs @ 1.67 GHz...) Don't want to start a flame war here, just mentioning my opinion...

I understand the situation quite well, actually ;-). Look for my thoughts on this at some point in, hopefully, the not so distant future.

I see a challenge out there for you case modders: Who's going to stuff a PC motherboard / Pentium 4 inside one of these and get rediculed by the whole Mac community?
I'm putting my money on SLCentral, that's who!

Hmm... There might be enough room in that base for a Flex ATX motherboard and I've got an extra one we can use.

I'm probably alone thinking this, but that thing is ugly ...
For starters, it's white !! Hopefully, they'll offer non-fruity colors eventually.
15" I couldn't live with, heck, 19" is starting to feel a little cramped.
Power wise, I couldn't care less, I don't use Macs cause they don't have the programs/games I'm interested in, so that point is moot.
Just gotta say I don't like the look of that thing, but it's an evolutionary step that could lead to nicer things.

iMac is iLame
a Mac is a Mac, and that it shall always be. you can change the way it looks n-times, but it will always be a Mac on the inside, and Macs always suck compared to x86. who cares what it looks like, who cares about Darwin/MacOS X. I say burn the thing to the ground and stay with x86. if you're a Mac user reading this, join the x86 family. join us.. join us.. join us..!

This Apple proc. is actually quite fast. Faster than that 1.1 Celeron I know.
x86 procs run 32 bit. The processors in MAC's and the like run at 64 bit. So this Apple chips are twice as fast as their mhz rating is.
Have any of you even been on a mac? Speed-wise, they simply rock.
I like PC's better and will always have one as my main machine, but if I ever get into alot of buisiness work that requires a computer, MAC all the way baby

I don't think that it's quite that simple. I thought that I read somewhere that although Mac CPUs are 64-bit, they have longer pipelines meaning that they don't do as much per clock as other 64-bit processors.

Yes, I've used Macs, many flavors of them, and I did not enjoy the experience much.
BTW, it's Mac, not MAC, it's not an acronym.
