    Default StorageReview.com Says Goodbye

By the end of the month, the tech community will have lost another invaluable member, StorageReview.com. They've had their difficulties in the past, including some heavy critisicm and a loss of their entire MySQL database last month. Not many sources covered an area as throughly as SR, from IDE to SCSI hard drives, from CD-RW to DVD drives.

SR had a large part in defining the way we test hard drives. Over the years, their database of performance figures eventually allowed users to compare almost 200 different drives. Eugene and Davin of SR came to the decision after looking back at just a $500 profit over the past three months and countless hours put into the web site.

As I recall, their Leaderboard played a major part in helping me make the decision to purchase my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 a couple of years ago and then my IBM Deskstar 60GXP a few months ago. I'm sure that many other computer users can say the same. Truly a great resource. There is always the possibility of their assets being picked up by another establishment, so we can hope for that. A full message from the heads of SR is available to read on their front page.

Then again, you could have reported on this when not half the net community knew ... but what's the point of getting insider info, huh ?

That was news last week, when tech site learned of the news.

Still, it's a pretty sad news, that site was nice, the only time I visited it 2years ago, anyways.

    Although there is hope....

    1. I spoke with Davin and there are a couple buy offers that they are getting...

    2. They said if somebody can host it free it can stay up (with more stuff of course but the general idea)

No matter what topic I pick, everybody knows 10X more about it than me

But you don't have to grill me for it, keltorak, sheesh I didn't see anything about it until I happened to actually go to SR.

    Default Where to now?

Is there anything else out there that's remotely like StorageReview?

Hard drive reliability data is one of the best-kept secrets in the computer industry. Finding good numbers, or even a wide choice of anecdotes about reliability is pretty tough.

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think that SR really covered reliability, mainly performance. Heh, looks like Western Digital was really supportive of them. SR told them that they were shutting down, and Western Digital sent them their latest drive anyway.

Well, as I'm sure you've all heard by now, this news no longer holds true. In a limited fashion, SR will continue on with one person at the healm. Eugene. Davin will be going on to a full-time job elsewhere. Apparently after all of those offers for help, mergers, buyouts, and so on, none of them was attractive enough, but all of the positive notes pursuaded them to stick around. Woohoo!
