The European Commission says HP-Compaq merger OK
I read over at Yahoo that the proposed merge between HP and Compaq is a "go" with the European Commission. Of course, shareholders still have to give the OK, which so far they've seemed reluctant to do considering the stock-drops that occured directly after the merger was proposed.

A careful analysis of the merger...and of the competitive forces in the markets concerned has shown that HP would not be in a position to increase prices and that consumers would continue to benefit from sufficient choice and innovation

I believe it was HP who claimed that they would be getting out of the PC business should the merger not follow through, so I'm unsure how I feel about all this. I personally build all my systems, and those of my friends and family, but that's not an option for all of us...more competition is better, especially with the high start-up costs of designing/assembling/selling PC's.
