Hollings' CBDTPA has company in the House
Rep. Adam Schiff (R) of California drafts companion bill for introduction into the House.
As reported on Wired, US House Representative Adam Schiff his introduced new legislation in the House to speed up the potential passage of Fritz Hollings' CBDTPA, or Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act.
"I plan to introduce legislation that would safeguard digital content by spurring the rapid development of copyright protection technology," Schiff's "Dear Colleague" letter said. "Similar legislation, S. 2048, has been introduced in the Senate.… I believe this is a necessary step and I encourage you to join me in this effort."
The CBDTPA, formerly known as the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act, is a bill that would drastically clamp down on current technology and consumer products, requiring that any device capable of accessing copyrighted content be required to manage the rights of that content as well. It would render many devices such as MP3 players and DVD players and computer components obsolete/illegal due to their lack of legal functionality. This bill has many businesses in Silicon Valley and Taiwan outraged at the expenses and trouble they'll have to incur to police their users' activities.
