Default AMD intros Opteron and announces Windows support

Today AMD announced it was working with Microsoft to add 64-bit support to Windows for their new “Hammer” processors that have been renamed the Athlon (desktop) and Opteron (Server)

Finally this may help AMD get some decent OEM partners which they desperately need – Intel has Dell as support shop, but AMD is severely lacking this. But lets hope this 64-bit support is added to programs as well, and it doesn’t turn out like the 3DNow!

AMD is hoping to ship the new AMD Athlons (ex-ClawHammer’s) in Q4’02 and the AMD Opteron (ex-SledgeHammer’s) in 1H’03. The announcement also comes on the last day of Sander’s job as CEO, before he passes the title to Hector Ruiz

The announcement is also likely to increase the development speed of Intel’s Yamhill series of processors which support x86-64

Way to go AMD.. I just wish they would fire the PR people that decide the naming conventions for their processors... I mean GOOD GRIEF!! I thought hammer was a great name.

Oh...and how much did this cost them? Not too bad...just an antitrust defense testimony.

I think Opteron sounds pretty damn cool! Lets see if AMD can get some of the server/64-bit market share now! Well, when it is finally released that is

I doubt the "Opteron" (what the heck do these fscking PR people have against the cool code-names????) will make ANY inroads into the 64-bit market anytime soon. Has anyone heard of AMD scoring any Server-class OEM wins? Nope....

(Not that I'm against AMD, I infact have an Athlon, I"m just saying that people are thinking in all the wrong terms :-\ )

Well, they're only about 600 units behind Intel right now. That's all that Intel's sold of the Itanium so far...

You guys have to realize something though: How many AMD ads have you seen on TV or in MAINSTREAM print (ie. not a tech nerd magazine)?? I have seen little if not any at all.. And yet they still hang close... You can bet your bottom dollar that when the NEW Athlon MP chips come out, i will be upgrading, along with the new 64bit XP and the upcoming RedHAt release, just to have something like that seems awesome to me.

AMDZone had a poll on the naming of this. It was supposed to have been supported by AMD and the answer with the most votes would win. The other choices were terrible. So blame me and the other people that voted. Maybe it powers the transformers, like Megatron.

I was pretty disgusted by this too. Has transmeta made anything good lately?

When I lived in Austin they would run that one with the train. Asking which would you rather have Pentium or Athlon. And then explaining how the Athlon was faster in clock speed and benchmarks. It was actually pretty funny. But I haven't seen one since
