3Com to introduce NICs with onboard firewall
Apparently 3Com visits our forums
I personally called this one over a year ago.
Seen on Slashdot, ZDNet is reporting that 3Com is adding a new product to its existing enterprise line. 3Com already manufactures Network Interface Cards which use Secure Computing encryption software running onboard, but 3Com will be expanding on this idea by including license-by-client firewall software. From the article:
Embedded Firewall is a firmware version of Secure Computing's firewall, and loads onto the 3CR990 -- a 3Com NIC that includes a processor and memory intended to support extra applications. So far the 3CR990 has been sold with an encryption application, which offloads encryption tasks from the host CPU, but the firewall is the next security application in a list which 3Com intends to add.
The 3CR990 is already on sale for approximately $120 - Adding the new firmware code is $50 per client, with the policy server priced at $1000. 3Com will also be producing a Gigabit Ethernet version of this card, and is working to integrate the feature/functionality into embedded controllers for laptops and microelectronic devices.
