Default How to Add Front-Mounted Ports to Your PC Case

With instructions so simple, even I could do it!

Being the owner of an iPAQ, I know how annoying it can be to constantly plug these units in the back of my PC case. What usually follows is me dropping on all fours, crouching over, and trying to find the correct port to plug these into. Trust me, it’s not a pleasant sight. After a few tries, unlodging my USB connector out of my on board Ethernet port, I’m usually good to go. But for some reason, I’m sure I’m not alone.

Tom's Hardware offers the average Joe Blow a do it yourself solution complete with the ever loving pictures I’ve come to love.

With the advent of all of the new portable USB and Firewire technology, situations may arise where you'll want to plug in a digital camera or an MP3 player to pull or push data, and then want the convenience of disconnecting that plug-in device to take it with you. And what a pain it can be to have to reach around to the back of your PC to find the correct port! Further, many PCs are located in close-fitting desk spaces, and these environments often lack sufficient lighting to enable you to see what you are doing, and where you are plugging things in, which makes the process a real chore.

Warning: Do not try this at work! … but showing off for the wife is ok.
Being the hardware guru that I am, I decided to show my co-worker Ted this article and my desperate need for such a mod. You know someone as cool as I don’t have the time to be fiddling around with a stupid USB cable behind his computer every day, right? I think not.

I guess it was nice of him to wait for me to finish my five minute rant on the coolness of doing this and just why I need to have this before he removed part of the front cover to my computer, exposing a couple of hidden USB ports. A front USB port? Really? Uh…yeah, I knew they were there. Go away, Ted.

Everyone else interested in just how easy this kind of a modification can be should check out the article, How to Add Front-Mounted Ports to Your PC Case, by Tom’s Hardware. Everyone, that is, except Ted. He’ll be busy taking inventory of all of our power cables in the back room all next week.
