NEC introduces new handheld memory chips
NEC introduced a 128Mbit PSRAM chip based on the COSMORAM Rev.3 specification which was jointly proposed by Toshiba, Fujitsu and NEC Electronics. This standard allows for parts from these manufactures to be interchangeable, allowing them to back each other up in time of high demand.
"NEC Electronics today introduced a 128Mbit pseudo SRAM (PSRAM) based on common specifications for mobile RAM (COSMORAM) Rev.3, targeting next-generation handset applications.
The new PSRAM, called µPD46128953, has an operating frequency of 83MHz during burst mode, at a low operating voltage of 1.8V. NEC claims the performance was made possible by a new type of delay circuit that regulates the internal pulse mechanism. The new chip has a 32bit high-speed I/O interface, enabling rapid communication with the handset’s CPU. It also has three-driver output settings that allow system developers to adjust the level of noise, setting the optimal configuration for their application."
