Weird Windows 2000 Problem...
Ok, my Windows 2000 SP-2 system T-Bird 800@800 w/512MB PC-133, TNT, SBLive, DVD Decoder, SCSI card had been running great for the past 3 months without any problems (VERY stable).
Recently I noticed that my machine would start being very unstable very quickly (within hours instead of weeks). So I decide to reboot, I come back to logon with my username/password and I get this Windows message that my profile became corruped! How the hell? I noticed that there was something called Administrator.bak in the Documents and Settings folder where all the profiles are. I go and look and find that all of my Cookies/Favorites/Documents/Desktop Links, etc are all sitting there!
Weird!
I just made myself a new account and transfer all of my stuff back over to this new account. Has anyone experienced this? Why would something like this happen? I've been runnig Win2K since the week it was released and NEVER experienced anything like this.
Thanks-

yea I've experienced that before... mine was self induced though... I was overclocking and seeing how high my system would go... it managed to boot get all the way to the logon screen and it gave me that message when I logged on... I rebooted at a more stable speed and found my old profile in Administrator.bak as well... transferred everything back to my profile folder and everything was fine...
I'm not sure why it happens, it's probably due to some problem during boot up when it loads your profile. Did you overclock anything? Do you have proper cooling for your CPU? It might be a problem with your memory also. For me I can duplicate it by just running at that overclocked speed... It hasn't happened any other time but then...

I was not overclocked at all, never. It was the weirdest thing--it started to feel buggy and then I reboot and I lost my entire profile. Anyone have any ideas why this would happen on a completely stable system?
I restored everything, but I still just want to know why so mabee I can stop it in the future.

I tend to agree... could have been a wierd hardware glitch or power failure or something. The important thing is that everything is working now.

Yeah, same thing happened to me, and I was not overclocking either. Win2k worked perfect then it got sluggish all the sudden, and it stayed that way for a couple months, now its back up some, but not to peak performance like it was.
