    Default Windows XP

Windows XP will be available in October. Will most Windows 9X programs run on XP?

Without getting into a long post to answer your question.

Generally speaking, yes, most of the newer WIN98 programs will
    run on XP.

However, games maybe something different, unless the
maker posts patches or updates for OS XP.

Arrow A summary of my brief results so far...

System Shock 2 unpatched fails, but Windows XP posts a notice about this when you try to launch it. Shock2 doesn't work in NT, but it does run in Win2K if you force it to install.

Starcraft worked perfectly in XP. Of course, it, and other Blizzard games, have never had a problem with NT/2K/XP.

Worms Armageddon works in XP, even though it does not in Win2K or in WinNT. This seems to be the most promising result so far.

I haven't tried Pitfall - The Mayan Adventure yet, but I was gonna use that one next to see just *how* ancient of Windows apps XP would handle.

More results as I find them.

I was under the impression that XP only choked on old DOS run apps. Is this true?

Haven't tried yet. Just been too busy, plus I only have it installed at work. What apps specifically are you looking for? I'll see what I can try.

One thing I did read today; Microsoft says that in order to upgrade you will need to have Windows Me or Windows 2000.

You won't be able to upgrade from windows 98.

Really? First I heard of this. It's newsworthy. Got a source?

I believe it came from a ZDnet newletter which I've already
deleted. Sorry. If I find the site again. I'll repost.

    update:

    Here is the article:

    http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/n...2778701,00.html

    From the article:
    Quote:
A Windows XP Ready PC must be preinstalled with the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional or the Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition operating system and have at least 128MB of RAM.

Did you also see the specs? You need like 1.2Gb free and 128Mb of ram just to install it. Granted I have enough space to park a bus on my hard drive but still why do we need to have all of this code?

I also read that you can not upgrade from plain ol' Win98 though I can't imagine why. WinME has the same underlying code as Win98 so how can it tell?

Type in "ver" in a dos box. It's pretty easy to know what OS you're running, and it's a great way to make money. A damn shifty, sly, stupid way, but that hasn't ever stopped MS before.

They could claim that it is due to compatability issues, but common', it's not like we'd notice a blue screen of death occuring because of that, or just normal usage....

Actually, if it's Win9X of anything, it'd be 4.9X.XXXX. I don't have WinME installed anywhere around here to tell.
And I'm 99.9% sure that WinME and the other upgrade products check for about 12 files in the installation/media to verify that it's legit. And they check the contents of the files, not just to see if they're present. That's how it does some of its version checking.

I was playing this the other day on a Win2K laptop, and it wouldn't run if I didn't install the patch. It might be broken because of SafeDisc protection. Installing the patch helps to remedy this situation...so it's possible that installing the patch for System Shock 2 might alleviate the SafeDisc protection.

It should be noted that Diablo 2 runs in XP, and it uses SafeDisc, so it's quite likely that this may not be the issue at hand.
