    Question

I try to run scandisk and I get this message:

ScanDisk cannot continue because a program such as a disk utility has locked this drive. Close the program or wait for it to finish. Then restart ScanDisk.

Problem is that there is no disk utilities and nothing unusual running.....

What should I do to fix this?

Do you have Norton Utilities running? I got this message when I had Disk Doctor runnning. I'd just close every program. Including the ones in your system tray. If you're not sure what's running, just ctrl-alt-del and end task on the programs still running. End task isn't recommended for shutting down programs, but it is an option.

Ok, then goto accessories, system tools, system information, tools, system configuration utility, then startup. Check to see what programs are loading. You say you don't have Norton Utilities installed or something like unto it?

I don't have any utilities installed. Here's what's in the startup list:

    AIM
    ScanRegistry
    TaskMonitor
    SystemTray
    LoadPowerProfile (Register [Machine Run])
    CTRegRun
PCHealth (Something from windows, I did disable this, and still had the same problem)
    LoadPowerProfile (Register [Machine Server])
    SchedulingAgent
    *StateMgr

Any ideas after the following info...?

Boot your computer into safe mode, and if you still get the error message when you start the program then scandisk is screwed.

I'm retarded, I forgot that scandisk will run in safe mode (I think). I'll make a post when I try it :-)

Well, the only programs that looks suspicious is that PC Health and StateMgr. I'd close AIM and CTRegRun as well. Everything else is default windows stuff.

I booted up in safe mode, ran scandisk, and had the same problem! Any other ideas?

I would try using a boot disk and running scandisk in DOS. I have seen a situation where it wouldn't run in Windows. After I ran it in DOS, it worked fine in Windows again. I have also seen a PC that wouldn't do it in Win or DOS until I deleted a "mystery" file off the C: drive. (It was over 1 gig in size, and I have no idea where it came from) I don't know if ME supplies a DOS version of scandisk or not...

If nothing else seems to work, try unistalling then re-installing scandisk through Control Panel.(The Windows Setup tab of the Add/Remove Program applet). You may have corrupted the program.
Personally, I prefer Norton's Disk Doctor and Speeddisk to the MS Utilities- the Windows ones are so slow...
