BSD is a very good OS. It has great stability, and has better crash protection than damned near anything on the planet.

downsides: limited software support and drivers

    Default well...

My friend has freeBSD on an old pc of his...

basically, the commadn line functions are the same as in linux

ya know, ls, ls -i, startX, #su, etc :-)

now, there are many versions of freeBSD... if you get a retail packaged version, or spend a good deal of time compiling yourself, you have decent graphical interface. its easier to DL a text based interface, but this is really hard to learn with, unless you really have a lot of time on your hands.

yeh its stable, and yeh its uncompatible...

personally i prefer linux, but then again i'm not running a stay up or die PC either...

Acutally there is only one version of FreeBSD. FreeBSD. There are several different ways to install it though. The easiest would be to just download or buy a copy, and install the OS from pre-compiled packages. It functions some of the same way Linux does, but its also a bit different. It is a heckuva lot more stable, but hardware support is not the greatest. FreeBSD would be a great OS if you're looking to run it as a server. If/when you get your box up, LMK and I'll be happy to help you with any problems you encounter.
