Can someone run me through the process of dual booting win 2000 and millenium. I need to format the partition using FAT rather than NTFS right? Should I install win 2000 first or win millenium first
Just give me all the steps if you can thannks

I haven't done this before, but I would tell you that you'll want to do Windows ME first, since 2k has the multi-boot software on it.
(i.e., if you do ME first, when you setup 2k, it will (hopefully) see ME, and set that up as on option when booting..)

I have been doing this for quite a while. Firstly you will need to partition the drive in two, the 2k partition should really be bigger than the win9x one. Install win9x as you normally would, then run 2k setup. remember to choose the option to install a new copy of 2k. windows 2000 will sort out the boot loader for you by altering the MBR on drive C:, giving you the option to start "microsoft windows" or "microsoft windows 2000"

You can still format NTFS if you are positive you wont be using that partition for WinME related stuff. Example would be file sharing, or sharing programs etc. What you could do is format your Win2k partition NTFS, most likely that will be your D: drive. There is no reason why you should be using that partition for sharing files, or programs. Same for WinME, you can format using FAT (C: drive).
For example this is what I’m doing:
Win98SE C: 3GB Partition FAT32
Win2k D: 4GB Partition NTFS
Win98SE E: 10GB Partition FAT32 (Games, small programs like, H-Oda, benchmarking software, Sisoft, 3Dmark 2000 etc.)
Win2k F: 10GB Partition NTFS (Programs, i.e. Adobe Photoshop, Homesite, Microsoft Office 2k, ICQ, Python etc.)
Sometimes it makes no logic to do so, by using both NTFS and FAT. But I do it anyway, because most of my important files are done using Win2k, and NTFS gives me that peace of mind. I’ve never notice any type of slowdown using NTFS compared to FAT.

Why the heck would you want to use WinME ? from what I heard and saw, it has win9x's stability and 2k's compatibility. Which is a really bad mix.
if you insist, installing 2k last is the way to go. I'd put all partitions as FAT32 though, who knows when you might need something on the 2k drives while in WinME.
I dualboot, 98SE and 2k, and quite frankly, I don't know why. I haven't used Win98SE in months. 2k can do all I need it to do (cept for some of those damn Borland apps )

LOL…I know where you’re coming from, I don’t know why I do it either. Win2k does all what I need out of my computer. I’ve been trying out UT for the past few months now, looking for comparability. Everything is working out great; I’ve also installed a few more games HL, CS, Rune etc. I’ll probably drop Win98SE for good soon.
I saw a review somewhere, where they managed to get a GeForce MX to run faster under Win2k then Win98. Driver support is getting better.

Install Win2k first & then winME. I am sure this works.
If you don't have a bootable Win Me CDROM, W2k says some unrecognised OS if you try to install thru win ME & you know that Win 2k doesn't install thru DOS

1. winme, 2. w2k
Hi,
I already did it so listem:
(teher are many ways but this one is simple)
1 - you'll need two partitions, one fat/fat32, second fat/fat32/ntfs (you do not need to format the second one)
2 - install winme on the volume c (fat/fat32)
3- install w2k on d (not formattted, but w2k can format it during installation).
summary:
w2k has multi boot loader so it reckongize winme
I did it, it worked :-|

If you do it the other way, you're not ENTIRELY screwed, though...
Windows will overwrite the MBR on the hard drive if you install 9X/ME after NT/2K, but then once it does that, you can use FDISK /MBR to restore the old MBR, and then manually edit boot.ini to reflect the new partitioning scheme. To boot Win9X, just add another option to the boot order such as:
"Windows 98"=C:\
You don't have to do the entire ARC path like NT requires (eg. multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)...) to run Windows.
Now...as to which one saves more time, that's your call. If you think it's easier to keep Win2K installed and simply hunt for every occurrence of "C:" in the registry and change it all to your new drive letter, that's your deal. It took me about fifteen minutes using copy-paste-keyboard shortcuts to fix the entire registry in safe mode...But it worked.
Yeah, I think that WinME recognizes different pre-existing Windows OSes, and so it doesn't interfere with anything, but Windows didn't do that before. But as it was said elsewhere, I'm finding little reason to use 98 anymore. The only reason I keep that partition is so that I can easily play a game on it, and then scrub the partition and get a clean Windows again. This way, any game I test will have the same clean slate. But Quake 2 runs just the same in Win2K as it does in Win98...

i've did this about 100 timeS b4 with windows 98SE and i'm positive windows ME is the same.
First partition in 2, Second install windows ME, ounce finished run win2k setup and choose clean install NOT UPGRADE and you should have both OS's running. Just choose your OS at the bootup screen after your computer has gone throught the BIOS check.
Note that you will have to install any programs you wish to use twice, i usually install my programs in win9x first then reinstall the programs in win2k into the same directory to save hard disk space
