Because I leave my system on for long periods of time, I have always used Standby mode, up until recently. Once the computer reaches Standby mode, it is impossible to bring it out again. I press a key on the keyboard, the hard drive begins to sping up, but then nothing else happens. The only way to return it to normal again is to reset the PC. I have no screensaver assigned, and I have even formatted my hard drive and gone back to Windows 98 instead of Windows Me. The problem still persists, which leads me to believe that hardware is to blame. Anyone have any suggestions? Here are my system specs (Yes, I included every component, but somebody always wants to know something dumb like what my monitor model is when we're discussing hard drive failure.):

    Intel Pentium III 866
    ASUS P3V4X Apollo Pro 133A
128 MB Mushkin PC150 HSDRAM + 128 MB OCZ Performance Plus SDRAM
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 41GB ATA/66 Hard Drive
ASUS AGP-V6800 Pure GeForce 256 DDR Video Card
    Aureal Vortex2 SQ2500 Sound Card
    Creative iNFRA 6000 40X CD-ROM Drive
    Iomega Zip 100 Drive
    Linksys LNE100TX 10/100 NIC
    Klipsch ProMedia v.2-400 Speakers
    Samsung SyncMaster 950p 19" Monitor
    Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro
    Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer
    Generic 250W Power Supply

    Unhappy silimar problems

i had an internet keyboard that had a standby button on it. if you pushed it, the computer went into standby... Well that button became known as the "computer freeze up button" because everytime my computer went into standby i had reset it to get it to come back on. i don't know why it does that but i removed the internet keyboard drivers and now that button doesn't do anything... thats how i fixed my problem. i'd try to stay away from that feature. perhaps go to the control panel and set your power management to power down your hd after a short period of time. instead of using standby mode.

check out my computer problems post everybody! >:-(

try switching the network card and/or the sound card to another slot. VIA boards can be picky about what's in what slot.

Well, I tried three different combinations of the PCI cards across the six slots, but none of them resulted in being able to return from Standby mode. Thanks for the suggestion, mqatrombone.

When exploring the possibility of PCI cards being the culprit, always test with NO PCI CARDS first.

The problem could be in the Power Management settings of the BIOS. This could be why OS choice makes no difference. Unfortunately, I do not have any tips because I do not currently have an A7V running.

    Sorry.

I find that disabling advanced power managment gets rid of the problem. Ive had 2 different computers that once went into standby or sleep mode they didnt seem to wake up hehe.. by having the components power down so often like this can shorten their life..
