    Thumbs up

Well, yes, I think it is. But _do_ check the compability list first. (Somewhere on Be's site). And _do_ search bebits (www.bebits.com) for the drivers you need.

Oh, and do think twice if you pay per minute and use a modem.

But all in all, do it. The installation is at least much simpler than, say (...) , office.

I think the one thing that bugs me about the free version of Be, is that you have to have a OS installed beforehand.. you can't boot from floppies freshly, or anything like that..

Then again, I guess if you actually plan on using it as you only OS, you can probably find the cash to buy a full copy..

Now that i've used Be, it seems that it's great, but the main problem is that there isn't enough for it. Like devnut says, it should have the ability to boot from floppies. And my USB mouse didn't work. Oh well, BeOS can turn out to be a great OS with lots of work.

Agreed, though from what I understand, the greater amount of features that you speak of are probably included in the full version.. (i.e., NOT the free one..

Dunno, but I gotta get some apps for BeOS. I need to get drivers for my ethernet card. I LOVE this OS!

    (just tried it last night)

Thumbs up BeOS, only if it wasn't for Microsoft!!

    Hi there,

I recently downloaded the Personal Edition of BeOS 5.0 to find out what it was like for myself.

It is a really robust operating system, very fast and stable. It is considerably superior to that of Linux and Windows in design. If only it had come along earlier when the first Microsoft Windows versions were failing to inspire people and Linus Travolds hadn't written the first Linux kernel yet!

The lack of decent software and the limited hardware support makes BeOS a non starter. But I recommend downloading it anyway and seeing for yourself what it is like.

As Computer Active put it, "BeOS is a glimse at what could have been".

AFAIK Palm bought BeOS, or let's say the knowledge behind the OS. When I first tried BeOS PE, I was quite impressed, because of the ease of use and the whole layout of the OS.

    Pro:
    - redesigned OS for Multimedia purposes
    - really fast booting
    - easy to use
    - GUI

    Con:
    - virtually no drivers for modern hardware
    - no support from hardware manufacturers
    - no 'killer'-apps like Office etc.
    - no future

Every hardware manufacturer supports Win32 in some way. A few discovered Linux (e.g. NVidia). Unfortunately nobody will support an OS which has no future perspectives.
